You need more protein when pregnant – more high quality protein. The Dietary Recommended Intake (DRI) for pregnant women is 25 additional grams of protein each day.
But how much is that in total?
The DRI for pregnant women (including the 25 additional grams) is:
- 71 grams of quality protein per day for a 125 pound woman (125 lbs before pregnancy)*
- 81 grams of quality protein per day for a 150 pound woman (150 lbs before pregnancy)*
- 99 grams of quality protein per day for a 200 pound woman (200 lbs before pregnancy)*
(for twins, add another 25 grams to these numbers)
HOW TO GET THAT MUCH PROTEIN?
An ounce of meat (the weight after the shrinkage of cooking) provides about 7 grams of protein.
An egg contains about 7 grams of protein.
Milk contains 8 grams of protein per 8 ounce cup
Example: To get 81 grams of protein from eggs, you would need to eat 11.5 eggs – almost a dozen eggs, each day.
